This application has been developed to control the pick-up operation of a billet (diameter up to 400) from a furnace before the rolling process. The system is able to guide the tongs into the correct position and it can also estimate the distance between the first billet and the next. The billets are at the temperature of 1200 C. Data exchange is achieved by digital lines and Industrial Ethernet. The system implements an automatic exposure control to compensate temperature variations.
The brake pads pass through the identification station casually and with overlap. The vision system is able to identify the most suitable pad to be picked up (the one with no overlap). Thanks to the tracking of the position, which is done by an encoder, it is possible to do the picking-up operation in a different place to that of the identification station.
